You know the voice in your head. The one that tells you that there is something for you to be doing...something you want in your life but it seems out of reach. I finally listened to it earlier this year.
Prenatal Classes Focused on Natural Birth
I am so pleased to tell you that I am an official Birth Boot Camp Instructor. What is Birth Boot Camp? Sounds messy, difficult and regimented right? Isn't childbirth? We (not me) train months on end to finish a marathon. We spend 4 years (or more) to obtain our degree or specialized training with work. How much time do we spend preparing our bodies, souls and minds for childbirth? How many times can you give birth to your child? Once. Why not spend 10 weeks educating yourself and your partner in pregnancy, childbirth and newborn care?
Does the thought of unmedicated childbirth send chills down your spine? It shouldn't but even I thought it was impossible when pregnant with my first. Media heavily influences our thoughts around childbirth. How many births did you attend before you had your own? Most likely, you'll be saying none. How many newborn babies have you been around for more than 20 minutes? Probably very few. How many women have breastfeed openly in front of you? Maybe that lady at the mall...
Our culture tends to skew our perceptions of birth and infancy. The first question many people ask new parents, "is baby sleeping through the night?" Or "is he/she a good baby?" A newborn baby that is breastfeeding doesn't tend to sleep for more than 3-4 hours at a stretch for quite some time. What does a good baby mean? Can an newborn baby really be a bad baby?
So, let's change it! In Birth Boot Camp, we talk about the history of birth and how society has changed over the past 150 years. We talk about whole food nutrition and exercise throughout the pregnancy. We even ask you to write down all that you eat...you can't measure what you don't know. Are you really eating enough protein? Are you remembering your supplements every day? How are you feeling about food? It's all in your daily chow chart. Take a look at the free Pregnancy Nutrition eBook that you can get without a class!
Speaking of the chow charts, we give you an extraordinary Field Manual to use as a guide and to help you with assignments throughout the week. We show many types of births and have expert interviews. Relaxation exercises and comfort measures are discussed each and every class with both partners participating...yes, both of you! This program has a big focus on the partner.
Breastfeeding support is super important. Each and every couple receives Breastfeeding: the Ultimate MRE DVDs. IBCLC, Mellanie Sheppard leads couples through a 3.5 hour course that is followed up with discussions and activities in class. Cloth diapering and babywearing are other great topics to help you with your newborn.
10 weeks...that sounds like a long time! Well, its purposeful. You get to dedicate 2 hours each week with your partner and your baby on the way. You are in a class with other couples due around the same time and they will become additional support, especially after baby comes along. Can't make a class? Things happen, so there is an option to take up to 4 of the classes online! You'll have a week to access the classes and all the information that goes along with them including the videos.
Want to chat about the classes? Check out the class descriptions as well as the current schedule. Are you interested in a class but you don't see a session that will work for you? Contact me, Laurie, and I can answer your questions and help you!
Now don't forget, we have a giveaway happening for 2 tickets to see The Milky Way Movie presented by Calgary Breastfeeding Matters Group on November 12 in Calgary. The giveaway ends on November 10 at 12 am, so get in the the action!
