Cesarean Birth Awareness Month

Did you know that April is Cesarean Awareness Month organized by ICAN?

ICAN is the International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).

Check out some of the fantastic events that are running right now!

VBAC Friendly or VBAC Tolerant: Determining if Your Provider is Right for You is happening throughout April. Head to the event page to sign up for free! Melek Speros, writer of the popular blog article “Is Your Provider VBAC Friendly or Just VBAC Tolerant?” is joined by Melissa Kosloski, Lauren McClain, and Allison Record to discuss the differences between the two. All of the presenters are also Birth Boot Camp instructors!

Trial of Labor is a newly released documentary that follows several women along their VBAC journey. A number of supporting organizations have sponsored a free viewing for a limited time. Take advantage of the offers and settle in for an emotional journey.

ICAN of Calgary is the local chapter of ICAN. Meeting are held the second Thursday of each month at a South location and a meeting in the North is in progress depending on members. These meetings are great places to share your stories and receive support and education. Birth workers are welcome to attend. You can reach the chapter through their Facebook page ICAN of Calgary - VBAC and Cesarean Support.

Birth Boot Camp classes talk about cesarean births: valid reasons, how different interventions may lead to increased risk of cesarean birth, care for yourself and baby after a cesarean, breastfeeding tips, VBAC risks and benefits and more. The Birth Boot Camp class rates for cesarean births are 14% (based on student birth reports 2012-2014). Check out this great post on 9 Ways to Prepare for Your VBAC!

Please know that you are not alone, you have not failed and there are amazing people ready to help you with your next steps, whatever your choices are!

With Love & Light,
